The result: The Tory who won is so unremarkable that I’ve forgotten his name. More interesting is the chap in the big hat behind him; at first I thought he was the Monster Raving Loony candidate, but it seems more likely he’s one of the voters.
One has to ask what is wrong with the people of a Parliamentary constituency when, after four years of a desperately inept and corrupt Conservative-led government, they decide to elect another Tory as their representative in a by-election.
Which of the government’s policies clinched it for you, Newark? Was it the brutality inflicted on people who are out of work – particularly those with long-term illnesses and disabilities? Does the fact that people are being driven to suicide at an almost-hourly rate turn you on?
Was it the determination to push your wages down in order to inflate bosses’ and shareholders’ salaries, forcing a higher take-up of taxpayer-funded in-work benefits? Do you like paying high taxes to support the very, very rich?
Was it perhaps the ongoing privatisation of the NHS? Do you think that’s healthy for the people of Britain? Perhaps rickets hasn’t yet reappeared in your constituency but it’s just a matter of time. Are you looking forward to getting tuberculosis?
Maybe you are looking forward to the government’s Legal Aid changes that will put innocent people in jail and leave criminals free to roam your streets and victimise you any way they want?
Or do you really want a Conservative majority in Parliament so they can push through their long-cherished dream of taking away your human rights? Is that what you want?
That’s what your votes supported!
Worse still, you put UKIP in second place. UKIP! The party that, besides supporting the destruction of the NHS (you’ve come out very strongly for private healthcare, Newark, I hope you know that) wants to put your taxes up (although they’re trying to hide that now because people found out and didn’t like it), and supports marital rape.
Way to go, Newark.
At least you had the good sense to kick the Liberal Democrats down to sixth place and the loss of their deposit – but that just means you’re schizoid, Newark! You reward the Conservatives for policies that are a hazard to your health, and punish their coalition partners for the same reasons!
Way to go, Newark.
It should be noted that turnout was just 52.67 per cent. Presumably the other 47.33 per cent are the “disenchanted” voters of whom Ed Miliband spoke so eloquently in his response to the Queen’s Speech (did you hear the Queen’s Speech, Newark? She listed 11 more-or-less pointless bills put forward by a zombie Parliament – which you have supported).
Let us hope those 34,779 lost voters can be persuaded to re-engage with democracy in time for next year’s general election, and restore sanity to your constituency.
Now go away, Newark.
You really don’t deserve all this attention.

The voters of Newark were thinking, “There’s an election, we had better go and put our cross against the Conservative candidate” Just like they have done for generations. My uncle lived not far from there. He was a railwayman and like many before the war was a member of the Communist Party. He always used to say the people there would leave the workhouses and the soup kitchens to turn out and vote for the tories. Seems he’s been proved right
Does anybody reading this actually live in the constituency?
I’d like to know what would happen if someone sent this article (or an abridged version) to the local paper as a letter.

It is because, as I pointed out in a previous comment, the message of economic recovery and the last Labour governments failiures are being pushed.
ATOS deaths, NHS privatisation etc… are not.

Absolutely to Keep UKIP out. It’s what both Labour &Tory canvassers reported. I come from the next door constituency. Newark went Labour in ’97 but is traditionally a Tory stronghold. Labour we’re never going to win this by-election. Better a Tory for a year than let in a racist bastard even for a few days.

But it leads back to another fundamental question of our times, which is the rise of UKIP. Why are people having to vote for someone they don’t want, just to keep out someone worse? Is there a sanity issue across the country? Do people really think UKIP is better or have they simply not read any of UKIP’s party promotional material?
They kept the racists out lib dims lost their deposit, it would appear that no one posting anti ukip tripe on here has read the party promotional material, otherwise they wouldn’t be posting junk like calling ukip racist, after all it is the europhiles who are keeping the coloured and black people out whilst as many white criminals as want to can come in from the eussr. Get it right before you post smears against a party.

If UKIP truly aren’t racist an awful lot of people who post on the internet that they support them are going to be very disappointed.
This is what is keeping the tories in good stead unfortunately. By the way, that lying bastard IDS is on question time on BBC 1 next Thursday, I wonder what lies he will be peddling ?
People vote for what they think is in their own best interests, and with the Conservatives’ line of “cutting the deficit”, “jobs and growth” and “making the tough decisions” people were willing to give the cons the benefit of the doubt.
Sadly many people don’t care about the disabled, unemployed or sick, who – as you said in your article – have been hit hard by this government. People have been fed lies about the unemployed and disabled for years, so why would they care? That’s what’s so sick about the relentless propaganda that appears in our popular press – that it works, it works and people believe it, and people suffer as a result of it.
As for why reward the cons yet punish the Lib-Dems? Well voters are strange sometimes. I’m tempted to cite party political tribalism for this, but of course thousands of local Lib-Dem supporters either rejected their party outright, or simply stayed at home on polling day.

I wasn’t trying to ‘win’ with this article, anyway. I just wanted to point out the foolishness of what voters did yesterday.
i meant that in a nice way mike whatever you or i do will never work we both will have to accept this fact we are of an age that has gone and is not coming back
many countries are in this situation where decent people like yourself are never listened to or respected
iv’e had this all my life from English people but never from someone from overseas be they from Poland or the far east or from the middle east all accommodating all showing me the most respect be it in their home or in the hotel i have a hose full of wonderful class leading photo’s with no English people in them at all
sure it’s sad but when you have gone down the thatchers routes what would you expect as all you end up with is a country of nothing a country of blind and deaf people who cant even tell you the name of the road their standing in
i would go as far and say that the only people today that do know what’s going on around are the deaf and blind and very friendly they are which just goes to show that the uk is not that bad but overall things are bleak and that’s how their going to stay come what may
Hmm. Only today I was asked to look into an issue because my readers respect me. Maybe there just aren’t enough readers? That would tend to fit with your claim that we’re in a country of politically deafblind people.

At least they told the Lib Dems what they thought of them. But it seems strange that they would vote for this vile government. I think it’s tribal loyalty-as it would be if someone in the 1740s had tried to get Clan Campbell to revolt against their chief the Duke of Argylle, or tried to get the Icieni back in Boudicca’s time to reject their queen. Or like getting someone in a coupledom where one member of the couple is evil to others to break up.

Newark is one of the tory strongholds UKIP did well to reduce the numbers as far as they did.
Labour won it in 1997.
The boundaries have been altered since 1997.

One of the reasons I am not a democrat in the classical interpretation of the term.
There will, in a democracy always be those too stupid to be trusted with a vote, those few who will usurp the freedom and power this democracy grants them to the detriment of the majority and their own greedy ends, those who will twist this freedom into an excuse for control of the masses and there will always those who can’t be bothered and thus allow by default this appropriation of democracy.
I do not care for the baggage that goes with this illusory freedom this ‘democracy’ offers us.
