I’m not usually one to go out of my way to defend the Guardian.

However, it should be remembered that the present ‘legal difficulties‘ being experienced by David Cameron’s two News International mates at the moment stem from the Milly Dowler hacking story published by the Guardian back in July 2011.

Until this story broke the public didn’t really care all that much about oversexed or unfaithful MPs and stars having their phones hacked. 

At the time, James Murdoch was even said to have described the accusations of hacking as ‘unimportant’. 

The Guardian’s Milly Dowler investigations however changed all that.
